IOWA WOLVES
G-LEAGUE FRANCHISE
Best-In-Class Minor League Team
Starting and running a minor league franchise is completely different than managing a team in the big leagues. With a fraction of the staff and budget, teams need to operate with incredible creativity and a laser-like focus on efficiencies. When the Timberwolves decided to join the G-League, Johnson was asked to lead the initiative.
The initial effort focused on finding a location for the new team by researching multiple regional centers and conducting an analysis of an expansion model versus an acquisition model. In the end, the acquisition of an existing team in Des Moines, Iowa was decided upon and Johnson helped negotiate the purchase of the team and led the process to create a new name, brand, and uniform for the franchise.
Over the next three years Johnson hired a team president and oversaw franchise operation's as they established themselves as one of the most successful G-League franchises. The team consistently ranks in the top 7 (of 29 teams) in important business metrics, such as tickets-sold and revenues. Johnson also served as the Alternate Governor for the G-League Board of Governors.
