Ending America's 40-year Drought
The Eiffel Tower. Ferris wheels. The Seattle Space Needle. The telephone, television, touchscreens and even ice cream. All of these iconic items share the distinction of being unveiled at a World’s Fair (World Expo). And yet, despite our long love affairs with World's Fairs, the United States has not hosted an Expo since 1984. Expo 2027's bid effort is hoping to host the first World's Fair on American soil in 40 years.
The 2027 bid effort was in trouble when we were engaged in August of 2021. Support was flagging, money and not been raised and the United States government was considering withdrawing the bid. Over the course of two years, we re-constituted the Board, added national members and recruited two prominent Co-Chairs. We raised $3 million dollars and engaged some of the biggest corporate brands in health & wellness. We elevated the profile of the campaign within the United States government and received personal engagement from President Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, U.S. Surgeon General Murthy, Raimondo, and countless diplomats, ambassadors and members of Congress. Support in Minnesota came from Governor Tim Walz, Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan, legislative leaders and elected officials from city and county levels of government.
The campaign effort has consisted of multiple presentations to the General Assembly of the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE), diplomatic briefings and multiple meetings and receptions among the 150 member nations of the BIE. Notable is that in November 2022, we became the first U.S. bid to be deemed "Viable" since 1979. The selection of a host community will take place in Paris, France on June 21, 2023.
